Watering Tips for Container Gardens

This piece is in partnership with Gardena, Europe’s leading brand of high-quality gardening tools. They sent me their NatureUp! vertical planter to try out as well as the AquaRoll M hose set that you’ll see in the video.

Container gardening is a fantastic way to grow food in space that might otherwise be unproductive. Currently, I have various planters filled with lettuce, mixed greens, and greenhouse tomatoes.

I potted up my GARDENA NatureUp! planter just a few weeks ago in a kind of dead space by my kitchen door. Amazingly it’s already giving me lettuce harvests! All I need to do is open up the kitchen door for a veggie burger garnish or some mixed greens for a salad.

I’m watering the planter every couple of days or so but imagine it will need a daily watering soon. A finger stuck in the compost tells me whether it needs a drink or not. A couple seconds of water inside each pocket and the plants are kept from going thirsty.

Once all container-grown edibles get growing, it’s important to be diligent with watering. Compost in containers dries out quickly but staying on top of things and keeping it moist will stop edibles from wilting and bolting. In lettuce and other greens, that’s when the plant sends up a flower spike and the leaves take on a bitter taste.

Steady watering also helps stop some diseases and issues like blossom end rot and split tomatoes.

I give a few watering tips in this video alongside a look at my propagated tomatoes and a fun new project – growing peas in a gutter. I spotted the idea last year and tried it out for the first time this year. Amazingly the gutter held together during the car ride to the allotment and they’re now happily tucked up in one of my raised beds.
