Grow FREE PLANTS in Water

Quite by accident, I discovered that cuttings of some herbs, flowers, and vegetables will root in water. Propagating cuttings in water is something that we do with a lot of houseplants but it’s not commonly done with food plants. It’s a great garden hack to know since it means that I can create a beautiful display and new plants for free!

While normally I’d place these cuttings in a pot of free-draining compost, rooting them in water saves a little time and is fun to watch on your kitchen windowsill. Here’s how I’ve propagated rosemary, sage, verbena bonariensis, and ivy-leaf geranium.
