How to Clean up Strawberry Beds

One garden job that I do every January is cleaning up my overgrown strawberry patch. In summer the plants spread and send out runners in every direction. If you don’t keep on top of them, the strawberry bed can turn into a tangled mess. Strawberry bed maintenance is key to keeping it healthy and flushed with fresh berries.

In summer, I let my plants root in the bed, but tend to cut runners off around the edges. The masses of leaves can protect the bed during the coldest parts of the winter. Come late-winter, I give my overgrown strawberry patch a good clean. It’s a lot easier to do than you’d think.

If you’re in a colder region, wait until early spring to do this job. Strawberry plants will have a better chance of survival if they’re protected with a thatch of leaves and spent mulch.

Also on the agenda: clearing two rows of strawberry plants in order to plant new bare-root plants. These need to be planted in the winter, when they’re dormant. Replacing plants every three years with new plants keeps berry production high. You can do this with bare-root plants, purchased potted plants, or from new plants created from runners.
