The Secret to Growing Calathea | The Barefooted Gardener

Calathea can be tricky to grow, however, it’s not as difficult as you’d think. Keeping in mind a few things, like getting the lighting / sun tuned in: Calathea, for the most part, like to have an hour or two of direct sun. and watering, you’ll be successful. I recommend to not fertilize Calathea at all during winter, unless it’s with water from fish tanks. Self watering pots, or pots without drainage holes may be super helpful with keeping plants hydrated. They are amazing tucked into a shady corner of your patio during summer.
You may have the plants die back to the bulb, or have an acclimation period where they are adapting to your environment. That said, if you’re regularly pruning off dead leaves, and not having new growth, consider moving them to a different location. Possibly more humid & brighter. Remember they are jungle plants.
