When pruning herbs for harvest or for shape, it’s vital to follow the ‘rules’ of the plant…the way it naturally grows. This way you’ll stimulate new, delicious growth as well as shape the plant over the course of the season or seasons.

We’ll be pruning rosemary, green onions, and of course the classic basil in this video to demonstrate a few different approaches.

Atlantis Water Gardens is located at 3017 Route 10 in Denville (Morris County), NJ (New Jersey) with a full pond supply store and specializes in the design, maintenance and construction of backyard fish ponds, boulder waterfalls, fountainscapes, decorative water features, natural looking ponds, koi fish ponds and outdoor goldfish ponds for backyard landscapes.

Over the past year, I’ve been giving the backyard of my new home a garden makeover. It started as a square of grass with a lovely glass greenhouse in the corner. Bit by bit, I’ve added a rose arbor, raised beds, a patio raised bed, and pea gravel garden paths. The transformation in one year makes me such a happy camper! It means that I have a garden ready to go for spring planting and the work has added a lot of value to the house.

But what has it cost? In this video, I go through all the major projects, show before and afters, and at the end give a grand total*. Please keep in mind that plants, seeds, and other gardening sundries are not included. It’s the cost of taking a patch of grass and turning it into a small kitchen garden.

I also compare the cost of the construction of the home garden to the allotment garden. The latter has cost me very little since I built it over the years using discount, free, and foraged materials. The same goes for many of the plants I grow there too.

*Aside from one project, I and my OH did all the labor. If you’re watching this and wondering how much it would cost to get a landscaper to do it, you should speak to a local landscaping company. The price will likely be many times my own amount because of labor and write-ups on materials. Businesses are there to earn a profit, but if you have the time, tools, and determination, you can save by doing it yourself.
