Ever had a houseplant on its last legs and wanted to bring it back to EPIC health? Here’s how I do it.

I got this spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) from a friend at a plant swap. It was looking pretty terrible – lanky, diseased, and many broken or browning leaves. It was also tossed into a large pot from a small pot, with bare roots exposed – not good!

I took it through a standard process:

1. Diagnose the root system. Is there rot, root circling, or any other damage? If so, fix this first. Prune the roots aggressively, cutting away rot and tease them apart so they don’t continue their poor growth pattern in the new pot.

2. Diagnose the leaves. Are the leaves diseased, damaged, bent, cracked, or simply looking a bit out of place? Be aggressive with your pruning, cutting as close as possible to the base of the leaves with sterilized pruning snips.

3. Repot. Use fresh, high-quality indoor potting mix and size the pot up about 1″ or so to account for rapid growth now that youre plant is nice and healthy. Pot up, water in, then place in optimal conditions for a few weeks and monitor progress.

https://skypots.com/ My friend Ryan Benoit of The Horticult just launched SkyPots, a way to turn any normal pot w/ a drainage hole into hanging pots that you can chain together.

You could definitely DIY something like this, but some of the design choices Ryan made I really prefer over a DIY – the sealed flanges prevent leaking while also allowing diffused drainage to the pots below. It’s also REALLY sturdy and keeps the pots from moving around or jiggling.

Ryan has been an engineer for 20 years, but is in love and obsessed with plants just like I am. This is his first project and it’s been really fun to see him put so much effort and time into it, and I really want to see this succeed for him. I figured I’d bring it to you guys to see what you thought!

I got my dragon fruit plant to flower and it was the most beautiful thing ever. Afterwards, I did hand pollination as I believe it’s a self-fertile, self-pollinating variety, so no need for cross pollination. Fingers crossed though, as my pitahaya is unlabeled and it could be a variety that requires a cross or is not self-fertile.

I highly encourage you to watch the entire dragonfruit playlist in order if you have yet to see it, as I’ve been learning how to grow dragon fruit from cuttings for a year now and finally got flower buds, which is SHORT for dragonfruit.
