I LOVE shopping farmers markets to supplement the produce I grow at home…and as a gardener I’m always curious as to a farmers growing methods. But in talking with a few of my farming friends, I’ve learned that many “farmers” at the market are anything but. Some are resellers of purchased produce, selling under the guise of being a farmer.

Some claim to grow in a certain way, but don’t. Now, of course this is not ALL farmers (or even a majority), but the rise of popularity in local and organic produce means there is a corresponding rise of people looking to take advantage of an uneducated consumer.

I hit up my friend Steven Cornett of Nature’s Always Right, a local farmer who sells at the market. Together we came up with 5 questions to ask your farmer at the market, AND the answers you’re looking for to see if they’re growing food in a way that aligns with food you want to buy.

He’s only used a stander a couple times. His stripes were not bad at all, very impressive actually for having very minimal time on a stander. Just a few little things to touch up and he’s good. He made a great diamond pattern on one of our lawns. He then goes on to share his thoughts on using a stander compared to his zero turn.

An update on the home garden plus a special birthday Q&A using the questions you sent me on postcards.

It’s late summer in the Home Garden and there are days that already feel autumnal. Over the past year it’s gradually changed from an open grassy lawn to a decently productive backyard garden. The greenhouse is overflowing with plants and veg and flowers fill the four raised beds and the patio garden.

In this video I share what’s growing, updates on the tomatoes, mushroom log, raised beds, corner bed on the patio, and the next big project for the home garden.

I also answer the questions that you sent to me on postcards over the past few weeks. Some are personal and some are questions about problems folks have been having with growing their own veg.
