It’s August in the allotment garden and the peak of summer. Today there’s also a special treat as we have masses of butterflies that have taken up residence both in the allotment field and in the buddleia around the car park. Dozens and dozens of various species all feeding on flowers and some even preparing for long migrations.

On the garden menu for today though: harvesting cabbage, digging potatoes, discussing my bindweed dilemma, and a look around the plot to see what else is ripe and ready.

Lastly, an announcement. I have well over 50K subscribers now and would like to celebrate in time for my birthday in September. I’ll be hosting a Q&A video that will air on Sunday, September 8th (yes, I said 9th in the video, sorry!).

The questions that I’ll be answering will be sent to me from YOU on a postcard. That’s right, a real life hello from you to me from wherever you are in the world. Write your question on the postcard and send it to me at the address below. I can’t wait to see them.

Lovely Greens, PO Box 31, Ramsey, IM99 4QX, Isle of Man, British Isles

The closing date for postcards is Saturday, August 31st.

Thanks and do leave me any questions and comments you may have from the video down below.

With its tropical origins, it’s no surprise that Peperomia obtusifolia is popular. Often grown as a prized houseplant, the baby rubber plant loves its humidity, but can’t take cold temps. It’s surprisingly self-sufficient, and makes for a perfect green addition to your home.

Slender stems support fleshy, almost succulent-looking leaves. Whether it’s one of the multicolored varieties or all green, it’s quite a sight to behold. A perennial, it’s capable of living for years in the right environment. Inviting one of these beauties into your home is a joy!

So let’s talk about the “pepper face”, this sweet little gem amongst the varied peperomia species. We’ve collected all the tips you’ll need to grow your own. You’ll love the lush foliage it provides for you every year.

This piece is in partnership with Gardena, Europe’s leading brand of high quality gardening tools.

In today’s video it’s time to harvest the garlic and prepare a bed on the new half-plot to be planted with spring cabbage and brassicas. I’ll also be trying out a new tool that I was sent by Gardena. It’s one that I’ve not seen before and was really curious to try out.

For years I’ve kept just a few basic tools at the allotment. I’ve gotten by but it’s been difficult to add any more due to space constraints — I have a single space in the rack inside the shed.

That’s why I’m genuinely excited by the Combisystem — it’s a single handle and 80 different tool-attachments. Hoes, rakes, cultivators, you name it. With it I can replace 3/5 of my old tools AND be able to add specialty tools like the lawn edger to the mix. I’ve always wanted one but couldn’t justify it before.

There’s more information on the Gardena’s Combisystem and all the attachments here: https://www.gardena.com/int/products/soil-ground/combisystem/
