Robert Špiler in Tjaša Štruc sta po zaključenem študiju leta 2013, s polno glavo idej in mladostne energije, na gozdni jasi sestavila čudovito malo hiško ter poleg vzpostavila velik vrt. Pri vsega 22. letih sta začela živeti svoje preprosto življenje in odkrivati lepote Narave.

Združila sta Tjašino akademsko znanje (mag. biologije in ekologije) ter večletno Robertovo prakso dela na vrtovih po Sloveniji. Po mnogo uspešnih in tudi zgrešenih vrtnih poizkusih, so ostala le najboljša spoznanja – akademska, praktična, družinska, permakulturna in biodinamična, ki jih danes predajata naprej. Na svojem vrtu uporabljata predvsem kompostno zastirko v kombinaciji z ostalimi organskimi materiali, ki zaščitijo zemljo in imitirajo pogoje v Naravi. Tako dosežeta univerzalno rodovitna tla, mnogo manj pleveli in za 95% manj zalivanja; vse to brez prekopavanja ali obračanja zemlje. Prelepo, da bi bilo res? Ničesar ne skrivata, njuno delo, slike, objave, posnetki so dovolj zgovorni sami zase. Najbolje, da grete kar sami pogledat na kakšno izmed delavnic. Starejše vrtnarke in kmetje ob pogledu na zemljo vidijo zgolj trpljenje in delo. Robert vidi vrtnarjenje kot nekaj lahkotnega, kreativnega in sproščujočega, Tjaša pa kot vir okusne hrane, ki jo pridela z užitkom. Ob sodelovanju z Naravo imata tudi veliko razlogov za praznovanje in veselje, ter seveda obilje domačih pridelkov. Mnogi so z njuno pomočjo že občutili veliko čudovitih trenutkov vrtnarjenja in ti božanski občutki so na voljo tudi tebi.

Ljubezen do sonaravnega vrtnarjenja želita približati mladim in vsem vrtnarjem poenostaviti vrtnarjenje.

This was a simple DIY project that I thought about the other day. I went and got the materials and made it. All of the materials cost me less than $10! The whole thing took about 20 minutes to make. This is going to work great for tarping loads this year.

You’ll be surprised to know that almost all of these problems have the same root cause…over feeding. It’s a common myth that worms can eat 100% of their own body weight in scraps per day. This is almost never true!

A more accurate number is around 25-50% by weight. So for a pound of worms, a quarter pound of a mixture of bedding and food per day is adequate.

Today I had my friend Steve Churchill, owner of the Urban Worm Company, over to chat about this problem. He’s much more savvy about the finer details of worm composting than I am, so I figured I’d let him drop some vermicomposting knowledge and showcase his flow through worm bin, also known as a CFT worm bin.

So your seeds have germinated, and they’re even starting to grow. You’ve avoided damping off disease, your seedlings aren’t too leggy…they’re just…big. This is a GOOD problem to have! But, it’s time to pot them up into larger pots if you’re not transplanting them outside yet.

If you don’t, you’ll risk them becoming root-bound in their small pots and struggling for water and nutrients. Remember, most seed starting mix is inert (no inherent nutrition).

In preparation for my Apocalypse Grow survival challenge, I HAVE to have some spices and flavorings…but only if I grow them myself. I had to clear a bed out, so I harvested some garlic early and turned it into a green garlic powder.

Clean, wash, and dice garlic into small, even chunks. Slice bulbs in halves or quarters for even dehydration. I dehydrated at 170°F for 9 hours, then blended finely. I would recommend a coffee grinder if you want it to be a pure powder texture.

This was my first time learning how to make garlic powder and I’m already feeling like a homesteading boss :P. It’s pretty easy, though I could use a dehydrator in the future. Let me know in the comments if you have a better method!
