Lovely Greens is now on PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/lovelygreens

Winter is the perfect time to prune thornless blackberry canes and tie in green wood to a trellis. This perennial fruit is one of the easiest to grow in your home vegetable garden. All the care it needs each year is a top dressing of compost/manure and taking out of the dead wood once a year.

True to their name, thornless blackberries don’t have thorns. That makes them very easy to handle and to harvest from. Most varieties won’t send up runners either so they won’t take over your garden like their wild cousin, the bramble blackberry, will do. Best of all, their fruit is big, juicy, and delicious.

Thornless blackberries are floricane — meaning the berries grow only on second year wood. The first year the canes will be lush and covered with leaves. They’ll overwinter and then the following year they’ll put out flowers, and then berries. After the second year the cane will die and needs to be taken out to make space for newer wood.

Ever wondered if there’s an alternative to stackable tote systems for vermicomposting? Wonder no more! Flow through systems are typically suspended in the air and only use one chamber to process food scraps into worm castings. Better yet, you don’t have to deal with switching up totes, other bugs laying eggs in your bins, etc.

Now there’s still advantages to building a DIY tote system, but if you want to take a peek at a different type of vermicomposting, this might be for you.

Today I compare both methods, put together a flow through system, fill it with red wigglers and scraps, and show you the progress over 2 weeks.

January is often a cold, wet, and dismal month. This year it’s more like an early spring here on the Isle of Man. With 10°C / 50°F temperatures, the honeybees are flying and it’s actually been quite pleasant to get some work done in the allotment garden.

This week I manage to manure and cover part of the ‘new’ allotment garden and also have a look around to see what’s rearing it’s head this early in the year. The garlic chives are about six inches tall and I already have the first small stems of rhubarb waving their green palms in the wind. It seems like spring arrives a little earlier every year.

Let me know what the weather is like in your parts and if you’ve seen any ‘signs of life’ in the garden too.

Lovely Greens needs your help. More than 20% of my week is dedicated to creating a weekly gardening YouTube video but I’d like to be able to offer MORE. Courses, books, and other ways to help others grow their own food and create their own natural home. You’ll soon be able to support me on Patreon but you can also pledge to Lovely Greens on PayPal https://paypal.me/lovelygreens — thank you so much for helping make Lovely Greens happen!

Water Features for WOUNDED VETS | Recovery through RACING and Fitness

Coming home from combat and wounded, our military vets are in need of help and support. Today, my good friend and USMC Vet, Ralph Biezad from Pondscapes AZ takes us to meet Jess Maney from Vetdrenaline and shares a story of helping Brent Bretz. Brent is a severely wounded Army Vet and Ralph brought his talent of water feature building to his backyard with a donated fountainscape that will help Brent find some peace and tranquility at home.

When it comes to houseplants and container gardening, the most common questions I get ALWAYS revolve around watering:

– How much water do my plants need?
– How often should I water?
– Am I overwatering?

I decided to put this video out to give you a “watering framework” so you understand how all of the different variables in your environment affect your watering schedule. From air, light, pot type, soil mix, and even specific plants…it all affects how much you should water.

Hopefully this guide helps you learn how to solve your watering problems in the garden. I also include a self watering system you can insert into the bottom of your plant pots to convert any pot into a self-watering pot.

SPONSOR: HYDROBOX

Thanks to Hydrobox, makers of smart watering inserts for containers of all shapes and sizes. Convert your containers into self-watering ones by hydrating and inserting a Hydrobox in the bottom of the pot, then watering in well.

This is a 2015 Red Oak Manufacturing, Challenger Series 7×14 dump trailer. This trailer was custom made with a double thick bed and sides. It has a scizzor lift, led lights, loading ramps, 7,000 lb axels, 14,000 lb GVW, and it was always kept in a garage. You cannot beat that!
