It’s been a while since I’ve paid the honeybees a visit or that I made a beekeeping video! Over the winter I’ve left them alone as little as possible and it’s just now in April that I can have a good look.

Opening up a beehive means taking the roof off, and then looking through the colonies from top to bottom. This can chill the bees which is why you need it to be relatively warm and calm outside.

Early spring is a critical time for honeybees since they’re beginning to rebuild their numbers and need food to do it. There’s a high chance that their winter stores of honey are depleted so I’m checking my colonies, Primrose and Bluebell, to make sure that they have enough.

Today is the final day of the natural swimming pool build and it turned out amazing! I think the organic swimming pond movement is really getting some traction and it’s a matter of time before this methodology becomes mainstream. The ability to filter the pond water naturally, without chemicals, was important to DaNelle and Kevin for their organic family lifestyle.

So far the pond has been excavated, epdm rubber liner and fabric non-woven underlayment has been installed, large boulders have been placed in the bottom of the pond and now we are ready to finish rocking-in the rest of the swim pond.

Today we will also begin excavation of the constructed wetland filter and the intake bay skimmer for the pond circulation system. We’re excited to be working with this talented team of pond builders including:

Good Friday is the traditional day for planting potatoes. Though it’s been a cold start to spring, I kept to this tradition and planted my own just a day later. This year I’m growing a small patch of Red Duke of York First Earlies and am planting them the no-dig method.

This is the first time I’m attempting to grow them this way and it involves using mulch to both plant and earth them up. Disturbing the soil as little as possible is the no-dig way.

I did have to dig the bed over though to find the dahlia tubers that were still there. With those transplanted, I planted my potatoes just a couple inches deep in the soil. I did this mainly because I’m a bit fearful of a late frost and don’t want my spuds being affected.

Over the top, I spread about two inches of composted horse manure. As the leaves grow, I’ll continue adding more mulch to ‘earth them up’.
