Ebb and flow, also known as flood and drain, is one of the coolest and easiest DIY hydroponic systems to set up. They combine the benefits of hydroponics with the ease of maintenance of a raised bed garden.

I personally like to build these in a way that I can access them while standing up. In this video I give a high-level overview of how they work and how you might build one for yourself.

Ebb & flow is just one of many indoor growing techniques you can use, hydroponic or otherwise. Check out some of my other videos if you want to see more DIY hydroponic system tutorials!

Onions form the bedrock of many culinary creations. You can eat them fresh, but if you want to store some to use later on you’ll need to harvest and dry them correctly.

Onions need to be thoroughly cured so that they can be kept in storage for weeks or even months without developing storage rots.

In this short video we explain exactly how to harvest and prepare your bulbs for storage so you can enjoy your homegrown onions right through the winter.

Fruit trees are a wonderful way to grow food with little effort in your yard. With a little care they can produce large harvests for decades.
The only real work I put into my fruit trees is a little pruning. Pruning will help keep the tree healthy preventing damage and maximizing the yields. In my opinion it also improves how the tree looks in my yard.
My general philosophy is to prune on an ongoing basis. I hope to avoid large prunes all at once.

The Hobbit House was built by the Children’s Centre at their community farm just outside Douglas. It’s a small underground dwelling with round windows and door and made completely out of natural and salvaged materials. This tiny home is used as a place to help kids visiting the farm to develop social skills and to reconnect with nature.

As many of you know I am all about efficiency in the garden so I can spend more time enjoying it and less time working in it.
My overall goal is not to eliminate the time in my garden but to spend the same amount of time just doing things I enjoy more. This week my father and I were again busy harvesting crushing and pressing apples and we have been enjoying fresh tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries, carrots with a lot more on the way including my family heirloom grapes that are starting to turn but are usually best after the first frost in the fall.
As I was thinking about this week’s video I realized I have shown you everything that is going on already. So the thought came to me to show you some quick ways I reduce the level of effort in the garden in order to spend more time simply enjoying it.

If you have access to lavender, you can use cuttings to create dozens of brand new plants for free! It will take about 4-8 weeks for new roots to grow but after that, you’ll have enough plants to create the cottage garden or lavender hedge that you’ve always wanted.
